Installing eGroupWare

EGroupware is a enterprise ready groupware software for your network. It enables you to manage contacts, appointments, todos and many more for your whole business. This article provides instructions on how to install eGroupWare on your Nexcess hosting account

Step 1: Download eGroupWare and Upload to Server

  • The latest version of eGroupWare (1.6.x) can be downloaded from http://www.egroupware.org/download
    1. Extract the Zip archive to your local computer using your preferred archive manager.
    2. If you have a shared hosting account:
      • Using Notepad or another text editor (not Word, OpenOffice, or any other word processor) open the file called .htaccess in the egroupware directory.
      • Find any line that begins with 'php_flag' or 'php_value' and insert a hash character '#' before it to comment it out. (ex: '# php_flag')
      • Save the file and close your text editor.
    3. Upload the contents of the egroupware directory to your web root1) using FTP.

Step 2: Create a MySQL Database

  • Log in to your SiteWorx control panel and then follow the instructions provided in this article to create a MySQL database and user called egw.

Step 3: Run the Installation Script

  • Open the installation script in your web browser.
    1. Click Skip installation tests to continue.
    2. Verify that the path to your installation directory is correct and create an admin account for editing the header file.
    3. Enter a complex password or use a free password generator to create one for you.
    4. Enter the database name and database user you created in Step 2 and create an admin account for configuration.
    5. Click Write to write the configuration file to disk.
    6. If successful, click Continue.
    7. Log in to the Setup / Config Admin login with the credentials created for configuration above.
    8. Under Step 1 click Install.
    9. On the next screen, click Re-Check my Installation.
    10. Under Step 2 click Edit Current Configuration.
    11. Under Path Information, Virtual Filesystem:
      • Change the path for user and group files to your document root: /home/example/example.com/files
      • Delete the path to the backup directory.
      • Verify the URL path.
    12. Configure your mail settings:
      • Use your domain name or the server's hostname (i.e. xxx.nexcess.net) for the POP/IMAP and SMTP server names.
      • Use port 25
    13. Leave all other entries with their default settings, then click Save to return to the Setup screen.
    14. Under Step 3 click Create Admin Account.
    15. Complete the form to create an Admin account, then click Save.
    16. On the left navigation panel, click Back to User Login
    17. You have successfully installed eGroupWare! Log in to use this application.
