Backup and Restore (SiteWorx)

SiteWorx control panel provides a variety of options for backing up data on your account. This article provides information on how Shared/SIP clients can set up backups in SiteWorx.

Backup Types

The following sections provide a description for each of the backup types that you can choose when setting up a backup.

Full

A full backup will include all of your Web files, databases, and e-mail boxes (but NOT the contents of the e-mail boxes), along with the configuration information for your account. Everything needed to restore a SiteWorx account that has become corrupted or being migrated from one server to another, is preserved in a full backup.

IMPORTANT Note for clients with a Shared/SIP Service:

  • Even though you can execute full backups, you will not be able to restore from full backups. To restore from a full backup, you must send an e-mail to support@nexcess.net. Within the e-mail, indicate the date from which you want to restore, as well as the specific data that you want restored (all files, just Web files, just database files, etc.). Also, be aware that when your account is restored from a full backup, the contents of your e-mail account (i.e., messages) will be removed.

Partial

If you want to back up only certain data (and not all data, as with a full backup), you can choose a partial backup and specify what you want to be backed up: Web pages, databases, e-mail — or any combination of the three.

Database Only Backup

The "database only" partial backup includes all of the databases and database users on a particular account. This is useful as an everyday backup for database-driven Web sites, where the static content does not change very often.

E-mail Only Backup

The "e-mail only" partial backup includes up all of the e-mail boxes on a particular account as well as the contents of those mailboxes.

Web Data Only Backup

The "Web data only" partial backup includes the contents of the account's html directory.

Structure Only Backup

A "structure-only" backup creates a backup file containing all of the settings of the SiteWorx account WITHOUT the contents of the html directory, databases, or e-mail boxes. This type of backup file is useful when migrating or restoring large SiteWorx accounts.

Backup Location Options

In addition to backup types, you can specify the location where you want the backup file to be stored:

  • Default Location: The backup will be stored on the server at the following location:
'/home/[username]/[domain.com]/iworx-backup/' (where "username" is the first 8 characters of your domain name, and "domain.com" is your domain name).
  • Local File: The backup will be stored on your local drive, at the location that you specify. After clicking the Continue button, you will be prompted to enter the desired path (starting with the root).
  • FTP: Enter the path, FTP username, FTP password, hostname, and port for your FTP server.
  • SFTP/SCP: Enter the path, FTP username, FTP password, hostname, and port for your SFTP/SCP server.
NOTE: Regardless of the type or location that you specified for a backup, you will be able to download the compressed file to your computer by going to Backups > Management. Refer to Downloading a Backup File for more information.

Restoring from Backup Files

Full backups and structure-only backups cannot be restored from SiteWorx. They need to be restored through NodeWorx by your system administrator. If you have a Shared or SIP plan, send an e-mail to Nexcess Support (support@nexcess.net), indicating the reason for the restore, the date from which you want to restore, and specifically what you want to be restored (all files, only Web files, only database files, etc).

Conversely, partial backups can only be restored through SiteWorx (not through NodeWorx). For instructions on restoring from a partial backup, refer to Restoring from a Partial Backup.
