How to point your domain name to Nexcess nameservers


If you recently migrated your website to a new server and your domain name is already registered, then you must point your domain name to your current nameserver.

Attention: After changing your nameserver information, allow up to 24 hours for your changes to propagate and for your site to restore proper function.

Before proceeding

This procedure works only if Nexcess registered your domain; if another company registered your domain, contact that company’s technical support team. If you do not know your domain provider, visit the Tucows website to identify it.
These procedures require the Nexcess nameserver information provided in your Nexcess Welcome Email. The nameserver will resemble a web address; for example, If you are unable to access your Welcome Email, contact our Support Team.


If you registered your domain name with Nexcess, follow the steps below. 

Attention: Your OpenSRS login information can be found in your domain registration email, but only if Nexcess registered your domain name. Otherwise, contact your domain registrar. For assistance, contact our Sales Team between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. eastern time (ET), Monday - Friday.

  1. Log in to the OpenSRS control panel.
  2. Scroll down the page and click the Domain Locking. The Domain-Locking page will indicate in red text whether your domain is currently locked (enable) or unlocked (disable).

  3. If your domain is currently set to Enable, select the Disable radio button, then click Submit.

  4. Near the top of the page, click Nameservers/DNS.

  5. Click Manage Name Servers.

  6. In the Server Hostname column, replace the current hostnames with the Nexcess hostnames provided in your Nexcess Welcome Email. If you cannot locate this information, contact our Support Team.

  7. When finished, click Save Configuration. Allow up to 48 hours for propagation. To track the process of propagation, use the Nexcess Global DNS Checker.
