How to use CuteFTP

This article shows how Nexcess clients can set up CuteFTP to transfer files to and from their hosting account.

Before proceeding

  • You need the FTP account login credentials and server information, which was provided within your Nexcess Welcome Email
  • CuteFTP is a third-party commercial product and must be purchased, to purchase it, go to the Globalscape website. Nexcess does not endorse their services, nor does Nexcess make any promises about its performance.

CuteFTP provides a Connection Wizard, which walks you through the process of establishing an FTP connection.

  1. In the Host Address field, type your FTP server hostname that was provided by your Nexcess Welcome Email.
  2. In the Site Name field, type a name for this FTP account and click Next.
  3. On the next menu, type the login information for your FTP account and click Next. Refer the your Welcome Email as necessary.
  4. If desired, specify CuteFTP's default folder on your local device, then click Next.
  5. If the connection is successful, you will see the content of your local drive or the default folder on the left and the content of your hosting account on the right. If the connection is not successful, refer to the Troubleshooting section below.

If you cannot establish a connection, verify the following:

  • If your Nexcess web hosting account is new, your domain may not have been switched over to our service yet. Instead of using your domain name in the Host Address field of the Connection Wizard, enter your temporary FTP hostname in the Your Temporary Domain section.
  • Your connection may have firewall or proxy issues that can be resolved by changing the transfer setting to passive mode. To set passive mode, open Site Manager, click Type, and then select Use PASV from the Data connection type drop-down list.
